About
Kevin Fernandes
Fractional fullstack engineer in the Toronto area—WordPress platforms, headless web, and React Native apps.

I build and lead WordPress systems for large organizations by day, and ship web and mobile products through The CodeFern for teams that need senior coverage without a full-time hire or a three-vendor stack. Based in the Toronto area; remote-friendly.
My practice sits at the seams most teams struggle with: custom WordPress themes and plugins editors can actually use, headless migrations to Next.js + GraphQL when the frontend outgrows the theme, and React Native apps that can optionally share the same content API.
I care about codebases people can own after I leave—clean PHP and React, documented GraphQL contracts, accessibility baked in (WCAG / AODA), and handoffs that do not require decoding a black box.
Focus
What The CodeFern ships
WordPress engineering
Custom themes, plugins, Gutenberg, and editorial systems built for long-term ownership—not page-builder lock-in.
Headless migrations
Editors stay in WordPress. Presentation moves to Next.js. GraphQL becomes the contract between them.
React Native
iOS and Android from one codebase—standalone or sharing the same WordPress GraphQL API as your web stack.
Care Plan
Monthly updates, performance watch, and senior hours for WordPress, headless Next.js, or React Native products you already ship.
Experience
Background
At the City of Toronto I supervise WordPress platforms as a Senior Systems Integrator—leading development and sustainment across major municipal sites, guiding teams on architecture and accessibility, and shipping on AWS. That work sharpened how I think about editorial workflows, governance, performance, and long-lived platforms—not just demos.
Earlier roles at the City covered system development and graphic web design: themes, plugins, Gutenberg blocks, cloud environments, and helping divisions turn requirements into something that can actually ship.
Before that I ran Tapp-That Apps (2012–2018), building websites and mobile apps end-to-end for clients—design through WordPress themes and plugins, SEO, and native/mobile delivery. That independent stretch is the DNA of The CodeFern: one engineer who can own the product surface, not just a ticket queue.
